Since Comcast's founding nearly 50 years ago, we have been a "local" company serving thousands of communities nationwide.
We strive to deliver value to our shareholders while conducting business in a way that offers an unmatched media, entertainment, information, and communications experience while also working to minimize our impact on the environment.
As you'll see in the following pages, in 2010 we increased our sustainability initiatives and provided over $380 million in cash and in-kind contributions to charitable organizations across the country. We also had over 60,000 Comcast employees, families members and friends volunteer at hundreds of locations nationwide beautifying neighborhoods, upgrading schools, cleaning parks, and performing many other service projects. We did all this while also creating innovative new products and services and building on our commitment to improve the overall customer experience.
For example, in 2010 we introduced our Xfinity TV online service, which gives customers access to their On Demand content online, and released the Xfinity TV app for the iPad, which gives customers a whole new way to find, enjoy, and interact with their entertainment "anywhere, anytime" at home and on the go. The app, which was expanded with a version for Android operating systems early this year, has already been downloaded over 1.8 million times since its introduction last November.
The year ahead marks an exciting time for Comcast. In January 2011, we closed our transaction with GE in which we acquired control of the businesses of NBCUniversal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies. We will be working hard in 2011 to integrate NBCUniversal into the Comcast family and have assembled talented and seasoned management teams across each of the businesses with an overarching goal of investing to build long-term value and making NBCUniversal the premier destination for content creators and TV viewers. Next year's Corporate Responsibility Report will incorporate the activities of NBCUniversal.
We strive to be a company that is respected and trusted by all of our stakeholders customers, employees, shareholders, and the people in the communities where we do business. What distinguishes Comcast and our industry is that our employees are fully woven into the fabric of the communities we serve. Our employees live, work, and raise their families everywhere that Comcast provides service, and being an active part of those communities is an integral part of our success. I want to give special thanks to our employees who are committed every day to making a difference.
